Driver intended this volume to provide insight toward the philology and textual criticism of the Old Testament. He regarded Samuel as an excellent field for training the intermediate Hebrew student in the uses of Hebrew idiom.
'A Treatise on the Use of the Tenses in Hebrew and Some Other Syntactical Questions' is the foundation of all modern studies of the Hebrew and Semitic verb.
Published posthumously, this volume includes two key studies by Driver on the Psalms. The first is the article on the 'Prayer Book Version' of the Psalter which he contributed to the 'Prayer Book Dictionary.
S. R. Driver (1846-1914) was Fellow of New College until his appointment as Regius Professor of Hebrew and Canon of Christ Church in 1893.
